Town Council
Christopher was elected to the Southington Town Council in 2017 and has served two years volunteering his time and energy to do what’s best for Southington’s families, seniors, and local businesses. Poulos is most proud of his role in the Council’s collaborative effort to keep taxes reasonable for residents, while advocating for quality public schools, public safety, and smart economic development in Southington.
Councilman Poulos has served on a number of committees as an elected official. He currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Self Insurance Committee, on which he has worked to properly budget for our town’s insurance needs, and develop policies to maintain and safeguard an appropriate reserve balance. Since his election, Chris has also worked with the Southington Historical Society as the Town Council Liaison, helping them to maintain and improve their building, fundraise, and showcase Southington’s local history. Chris serves on the Volunteer Fire Fighter Recruitment committee, charged with looking at policies, procedures, and strategies for attracting and retaining volunteer fire fighters. Additionally, during his term, Poulos was appointed and served on the Tax Relief Committee, on which he advocated for broader eligibility and expansion of the tax relief programs that the Town of Southington offers to its seniors, veterans, and disabled population.
Professionally, Chris Poulos currently teaches Spanish and serves as Instructional Leader for the Humanities at Joel Barlow High School in Redding, CT. In 2007, Chris was named the Connecticut State Teacher of the Year. He is a National Board Certified Teacher. Poulos previously worked for two years in a hybrid role, splitting his time between teaching in his district and working alongside policymakers as a Teacher Leader-in-Residence at the Connecticut State Department of Education. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Teacher of the Year Council, a non-profit organizations that aims to improve outcomes for students through its advocacy for teacher leadership. During his career as an educator and non-profit administrator, Chris Poulos has fought tirelessly for students and families on the local, state, and national levels. He has engaged in strategic planning, program design, budget development, grant writing, and the implementation and evaluation of numerous initiatives.
A 1993 graduate and Class President of Southington High School, Poulos holds a Sixth Year in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut, a Masters degree in Spanish Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Leadership Studies from the University of Richmond.
Poulos is a lifelong Southington resident. He attended public schools, has worked, volunteered, and has chosen to settle with his wife, Helen, and two children Molly (12) and Andrew (8) in Plantsville.
