Board of Education

Zaya Oshana, Jr.Serving Southington’s community on the Board of Education has been both my passion and privilege these past four terms.  Because I come from a family of teachers and administrators, I understand the importance of providing our students with a well-rounded, high quality education.  Our children are the future, and we should expect The Board of Education to equip them with the skills and abilities to compete now and into the future.

My commitment to Southington extends farther than the Board of Education.  I was raised in Southington, and I have been involved in public service for much of my adult life.  I currently chair the Finance Committee and serve as a member of the Policy and Personnel Committee, Self Insurance Committee, Middle School Sports and Activities Committee, High School Business Advisory Committee, Ordinance Review Committee and served on the Planning and Zoning Commission as member, Vice-Chairman and Chairman.   Moreover, I am a member of the Democratic Town Committee and serve as its Secretary.

I graduated from Bryant College with honors and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.  Soon after, I began my career in Human Resources at Fafnir Bearing in New Britain, Connecticut.  Currently, I am the Senior Director of Human Resources for ASSA ABLOY in New Haven, Connecticut.  In between, I met my wife Karen, and we had two children, a son and a daughter, both of whom went through the Southington School system.  Our eldest, Zaya, is in graduate studies at Quinnipiac University; Katie, attends Sacred Heart University studying to become an elementary school teacher.  Throughout our children’s lives, Karen and I have been active volunteering in their schools.  I believe strongly in volunteering, and over the years I have served on the State Board of Directors for the Future Business Leaders of America, as well as with the Southington High School Chapter, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), The Special Olympics, Relay for Life, and The Southington South Little League helping to coach baseball.

Serving the town of Southington has been my honor, and I want to thank all the citizens who gave me the opportunity.  However, there is still much work to be done, especially with the Board of Education.  If re-elected, I will continue to work in the same non-partisan capacity I have always worked; listening and remembering that though our ideas may differ, in the end, our goal is always the same:  The best interests of Southington’s children.  I am committed to our educational system and pledge to do everything I can to make it an exemplary community of which we can all be proud.

To close, I will end with words that mean more these days than they have meant in a very long time, especially in politics; I have no personal agenda, and most importantly, my word is my promise.
